BIG IDEA #22 DECIDE Everyday we are confronted with making DECISIONS, yet I am amazed at the “analysis paralysis” and failure of people to make a decision. As I sit here now, there are a dozen projects going on and I’m making about 3-5 key decisions on each project to ensure there is progress and accountability. See most people think number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in some form of order, today my number 1 list has at least 12 things on it. That mean’s I’ve got twelve number 1’s. In reality, I’ve got no number 2’s because if it can’t make list number 1, it’ll never get done anyway nor should it. Ultimately at some stage you’ll finish up clearing your desk of all the number two’s that you never got around to. You can throw that crap out because it sort of takes care of itself over a period of time anyway. Think about what Iacocca did at Chrysler… SIMULTANEOUSLY. First he took an axe to the expenses, negotiated a better deal with the creditors and the government, launched two new product lines, not one, two, SIMULTANEOUSLY. The mini van and the convertible. You may recall also Iacocca and Chrysler invented the cup holder which was the single most important development in the automotive industry since the assembly line. The convertible story is a fabulous one. It went something like this - Iacocca was walking around the factory, and a couple of workers came over and said, “You know that car would look great as a convertible!” Iacocca didn’t go back to step two, five or six, didn’t worry about what resources he didn’t have to re-launch a line of convertibles. Instead, on the verge of bankruptcy and hemorrhaging money he said “Get a blow torch, cut the roof off and lets get in it and go drive around and see if girls look at it!” That’s called consumer research and then they came back and he said lets sell them. He didn’t say well get 15 engineers together and let’s start working on it. See that’s, that’s simultaneous execution.
THAT’S DECISION. That’s not how normal business people approach business. See if you had anybody but him in there, there wouldn’t be a Chrysler today. It would be over because if they tried to do that in an orderly manner, they wouldn’t have had enough time and money. Well in many respects in today’s environment normal business should be treated like a ‘turn-around’ because what’s going on around you and what’s going on in the market place and what’s going on with your competitors is changing so fast
